Alex Outhwaite visits Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. It is a great video, because there is little to find on this country in Africa. The gem is still new to the cruise world, but becoming of interest. Serra Lyoa (“Lion Mountains”), was named by the 15th-century Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra. He was the first European to sight and map Freetown harbour. Now it is your turn.
Whilst as or Token blog says, it is claiming to be Africa’s undiscovered gem, few ships stop here yet. The Silver Wind was one of the seven or so in 2024, and it loved Sierra Leone so much it did both ports. We know it is easier to find warnings than information but if sensible, staying in tourist areas or with guides, you can see tourists are fine.

Be careful, the island and its officials can be testing. More so at inland borders, cruise areas and their new tourism is being protected. However, as a cautionary note, Drew, a fellow professional traveller who we trust to make honest and informative films, found a different story travelling from Liberia, which he loved. This was a road border. Not one a cruiser would cross.
Africa can be great. Zambia is somewhere we loved, and that was totally unexpected.
