Suez Harbour is a gateway to Cairo (2hrs 20 mins) as it sits on the outskirts of the sprawling city. That means The Great Pyramid of Giza, the Great Sphinx which dates back to the 26th century BC, other pyramids, ruins and much more. It is also a staging area for those wishing to move through to the Mediterranean. Whilst Cairo is the safest city in Egypt, watch out for pickpockets. Cairo is over one thousand years old and is the largest city in Africa. It sits on the River Nile north of the Aswan Dam. The modern western city with skyscrapers shows influences from Turkey, Arabs and the Romans. Reminders exist such as an obelisk in the northeast marks the site of Heliopolis, where Plato once studied. The ruins are all further out on tours.
