Skagen is one of the cleanest places you will ever visit, the most popular holiday place in Denmark, and yet so clean. It’s sheer beauty and cleanliness divulge a culture of people that have it inbred not to drop litter or cigarette ends, but to create and colour their world with the use of the sun most months of the year. Skagen attracts artist to paint here, especially watercolour artists, and artists to sell. An exhibition you see one week may be gone and replaced another week, as we show from outside the Kunst Gallery. One little amazing stop, so easy to over look because of it’s subtlety is Ancher’s House, just over the road to the Teddy Bear Museum at the edge of town and an easy walk away. We show you where it is and the original house that they first bought and lived in for 30 years after the birth of their daughter in 1884. But, there is a tour of the main house which they had built and that and the story is very interesting. It also has a cafe, but no one disturbs you if you want to wander free through the old house, (seen briefly on this film to whet your appetite), where there are historic pictures telling the story of Michael and Anna Ancher and the artist colony that grew around their house. Twenty minutes for the old house, longer if you take the tour and main house built for them in 1913 by Ulrik Plesner, another member of the artists group. It is an easy walk or cycle.Find your ship’s chat site + share your pictures + experiences to help others The Skagen Museum seen first in this film, looking modern and sharp, consumes the old Garden House, which was the first house the Ancher’s lived in when married in 1880. Art is not just visual, you will hear music play everywhere, which is why Stuart said it reminded him of Key West; pastel colours, clean, art, music, seafood and the most charming atmosphere. This group of artists worked in the house for five decades, late 19th, early 20th century and there are photographs there to document.
We suggest cycles, so take a padlock. Because these are all stops on the way to Grenen which are far too interesting to go all that way and miss. The centre for Migratory Birds is also worth a look, and the climb up the lighthouse, but if you walk you will neither have time or the legs if your ship leaves at 1630hrs. See more of SKAGEN
