Puerto Limón, Costa Rica – New Port Expansion planned. Film of inland boat trip.

What a diverse area the Caribbean Season covers, from Florida down to the Amazon, the stranded mid-ocean islands like the Azores and Bermuda, to the mainland of Mexico and here, Costa Rica. Puerto Limón cruise port is also often a stop before going through the Panama Canal. There are no prizes for guessing how Limón got its name; it is the Spanish for Lemon. An area of only around 55,000 very mixed people as a result of labourers flocking there to build the railroad that connected San José to Puerto Limón in the late nineteenth century. This included Italian, Jamaican and Chinese but Afro-Caribbean people were not recognised as citizens until 1948 and therefore could not leave under restrictive movement laws which now makes them the dominant people in Puerto Limón. There are two port terminals in Puerto Limón; Limón and Moín. As cruising expands as a mega business, the government pledged ₡93 million ($166,000) for a new cruise ship terminal back in 2016. This may also have been provoked by the recently widened and improved Panama Canal.

This is a rich and green coastline, and trips to the botanical gardens (and animal rescue) will confirm that. It is easy to just walk the city, where the palm-lined promenade and verdant Parque Vargas will make you feel relaxed. But a trip into the dense rainforest, as we did on our rain forest trip of St. Lucia, will make a contrast to your beach breaks. They also have an aerial tram ride through the lush canopy of the Braulio Carillo National Park. The Monster Bus experience is great fun and you will no doubt see and hear a lot about the country’s rich exports like bananas and chocolate.

This port is the starting point of the Novel A CRUISE SHIP HEIST. Three members of a cruise ship crew and a lot of money at the airport, are hoping to join the ship. A lot of money.
