Mġarr in the North of Malta is better situated for Popeye Village than Valletta. Formerly known as Mgiarro, it is a small town and fairly isolated unlike Valetta with buses going everywhere. Nearby are two of the many prehistoric Megalithic Temples which date back to between 5000BC and 2000BC; the Temples of Mgarr, Ta’ Hagrat and Skorba are visitable ruins thought to be around 3300BC. Pottery shards, charred remains of fires and bones date this Neolithic site and the Bronze age civilisations built over the site making the study confused.
There will be offers of transport to Singita Miracle Beach, and the less sandy Gnejna Bay where water sports are available. If you stay in town it is a pretty small village with a couple of old churches or there is a bar in the middle of the harbour.
Looking at the locally offered attractions and tours is the first thing a movie location scout will do to research a place.

Always remember a ship tour offers the protection of waiting for the trip to return if it is running late.
