Leixoes (port for PORTO) on the Douro in Portugal.

Porto is 9km from Leixoes Port and takes about 22 minutes by shuttle bus if one is supplied. The city of Porto has Roman ramparts and Parisian-style squares. You can do a group cycle tour of the city that will take a good three hours, there is a river cruise on the Druro that covers six bridges and takes about 50 minutes, and there are cellar tours of the many wine maker. Porto is best known for port wine.

The cathedral area is filled with many treasures, like the Renaissance church of Santa Clara and the densely populated quarter of Barredo, which has changed little since medieval times. More churches than you will be able to see in a day.

Fashionable bars and restaurants overflowing with seafood are found at the riverside quarter of Ribeira. Porto is famous for food and drink. It offers a wondrous array of fresh local produce from fertile land and the sea at its doorstep.

If you are interested in winemaking, you might like to see a cellar tour from our Champagne weekend.

Reims, Hautviller, Epernay, Avenue de Champagne – guide

The film festival it is known for is called FANTASPORTO. It looks for challenging or strange films. Our own Stuart St Paul had a film invited in for Best Director. and In Competition, but he was beaten by fellow mate and colleague Steve Norrington who were both in James Cameron’s Queen Alien unit and both at Jim Beaches Queen pop video company Fugative, which made The Krays with the Kemp brothers. Unlikely to come up in a pub quizz unless you are somewhere that looks for the fantastic, like Porto!

Some things to research when planning your trip to Leixoes

… enjoy
