Also known as Laodicea in Syria or Laodicea ad Mare. It is the biggest port and the government capital of Syria, although Damascus is the capital. (Damascus is 4 hrs 20 mins away circling Lebanon on the M5). The site has been inhabited since at least the 2nd millennium BC. It is a beautiful city, with vineyards covering the surrounding mountains. It supplies wine to all its neighbours. There are many notable ruins to see including the Tetraporticus built in 193 BC. You will find boardwalks and piers. Latakia has a museum and many places of worship.
Or travel forty minutes to the citadel of Saladin or Saladin Castle as it is known. It has been rebuilt over the years, not least by a period of occupation by the Crusaders. Ugarit is half the distance and also has the bronze age ruins of the royal palace built between the fifteenth and thirteenth centuries BC.
