Ecuador is on the east coast of South America and likely to be in conjunction either with a South American cruise, or a cruise of the Galapagos Islands. It has a distinctly Spanish flavour and is a very religious country. The country’s diverse landscape stretches from the Amazon jungle, Andean highlands to the Galápagos Islands which are a nature reserve rich in wildlife. Quito, the capital is at the Andean foothills and has a Spanish colonial centre of 16th and 17th-century palaces and religious sites. The ornate Compañía de Jesús Church is likely to be on the list of things to see. However, it is way inland and a trip from either of the ports you may land at.
P&O go into the port of Manta where the beaches are welcoming, but you could take a taxi to Montecristi, home of the Panama hat, designed by Francisco Delgado in the 1700s. The main industries are tuna canning and coffee. Fred Olsen also go to Manta but also offers Guayaquil which is transforming into a world-class tourist destination. The old district “Las Peñas” still has picturesque colonial old wooden houses. Take a look at the tours we have found to orientate the possibilities after you have watched Mogen’s film for Doris Visits.
