Regular cruise ship guest, celebrity stuntman, director, and author Stuart St Paul has appeared in three James Bond films and was the Queen Alien in James Cameron’s hit movie.
His book CSCI series of novels has to date read like movies, been fast-paced, and had enough action for you not to recognise them as normal cruises. However, book 5, Disastrous Romance, was written in lockdown. It was a time when most of us were bored, and he challenged himself to draw a parallel between being mentally ill and being locked down. The premise of the book has the world coming out of lockdown and with it drawing out a woman who had been until then locked inside herself with a host of mental problems and agoraphobia. The twisted mind of the author who has had a star-studded career from Batman to Mrs Brown’s Boys’ puts this dangerous woman onto a ship.
Like Ian Fleming who wrote in his favourite place in the sun, his home on Oracabessa Bay in Jamaica, Stuart normally writes in the lounge of a cruise ship looking out at a similar horizon where the sea meets the sky. Parallels end there, for Fleming’s house was on a cliff overlooking a private bay and Stuart enjoys being interrupted by guests in his very public ship’s lounge where he writes each day.
Disastrous romance is out as a Kindle, paperback, and as audiobook; the first to be read in a female voice. It is read by his wife Jean Heard, who is often on the ships with him performing her one-woman show.
If you wish to start listening to the CSCI series, it is serialised free in 10-to-15-minute sections. Over 50 parts were loaded by the end of 2022 and a new part goes up every Monday at 8pm. See the YouTube playlist on YouTube.com/@DorisVisits

A gripping cruise-accurate page-turning thriller that I couldn’t put down. I’m not normally into fiction – but this book had me gripped from beginning to end. If you’ve ever been on a cruise, you’ll recognise so much of cruise life from Stuart St Paul’s brilliant story-telling. But this is far more than an ordinary cruise. It’s a brilliant adventure with many twists and turns. If you’re anything like me, you won’t be able to put it down.
I read this book while on my last cruise on P & O Ventura to the US and the Caribbean and I must say once I started it I was hooked and couldn’t put it down, sitting up late into the night to read another chapter. I really like reading books with a cruise theme while actually on a cruise. The story was exciting and certainly kept your interest. Looking forward to the next one.
