In our collection of Cruise Ship Speakers, we are pleased to add David Withington. David has his own web presence in several forms and is a good friend to Doris Visits.
There lies a key to his ability to be a very sought-after and interesting speaker. David cruises and has done many cruises including a full world cruise. Has been with a variety of companies and has been a passenger and a guest crew entertainer as a speaker. We think that makes him an expert. But his other presence is as a technical explainer. He has a web presence and lectures on Tech It Easy.
On the ships, he helps people with their tech, but his key lectures are on how to spot and how to beat scammers. His lectures get incredibly good attendance.
David speaks on topics such as using our smartphones on a cruise, how to identify and avoid scams, life-enriching apps, online shopping and protecting our accounts with secure passwords, and many more topics relevant to everyday life. He prides himself on his talks being completely jargon-free and gobbledegook-free, and suitable for any audience. A few puns and dad jokes thrown in help to make them fun and memorable. In fact, one person commented on Facebook, “Loved your talks… but your jokes are terrible – LOL!”
Like many cruise guest speakers, David enjoys chatting with guests after a talk or around the ship. People ask varied and interesting questions, and some questions can even become the basis for new talks.
But what is David’s background and how did David get into cruise speaking? Well, after 40 years in the telecoms industry, he took early retirement and sought to address a problem he’d noticed: Many people worry that technology has left them behind or is just too complex. So, David began creating his presentations to simplify tech – to make it easy for everyone. With the tagline “Tech it Easy”, he gave his presentations at a local community group, and later began to deliver them to cruise ship audiences.
David likes tech, as such he is also tech at Grammar and often reads the updates of the CSCI books for Doris Visits and is credited as an editor. He is a particularly useful person to a lot of people.
David and Stuart chatted on Zoom right at the start of lockdown and they discussed whether cruise ships might demand vaccinations long before the COVID rules were in place. It seems strange looking back at what is now History. They even predicted needing vaccine proof long before it was formally invented. When the virus broke, Stuart was on a ship in New Orleans, and David went into Sydney. These stories will be studied in history and are fascinating to relive. The cabaret act who was joining them in this very early lockdown zoom was Gary, Manuel Martinez.
