Excursions can turn a cheap cruise into an expensive holiday. Even a day at the beach can require reliable transport both ways. A day can often be cut short by taxis that only wish to work half days. Each port destination has a style; some have great ports and harbours or are fishing villages. Other ports can be busy dirty trading ports with nothing much if anything to see. Sometimes the beach is the best gig in town. They use the bus in Antigua to go to both Jolly Harbour beach and Nelson Dockyard. They take a ship-arranged day in the rain forest in St Lucia, visit Amber Bay and go into town to see an amber museum, as well as find out that the moon is right for Chi Chi fishing in St Vincent. David’s tech tip this week is on beating the scammers
Christmas is coming – T-Shirts are held at Zero profit until after Christmas, we are just happy that people like the shirts and it spreads the Doris Visits brand. Our new menu shows the onboard shop which, after six years we have begun to pay some attention to. There are gift selections as well as T-shirts. We will add things after we have the new podcast and series of bedtime reads for @CruiseBook@Bedtime. Next year we are hoping to release a children’s book series.
This week’s podcast looks at what happens on a port day. Do you walk around the port, take an excursion, or have an adventure with the local bus? Some ports are Tender Ports. It means you get ferried ashore.
Martinique – there is not a lot in port, but the free wi-fi is in the library – not on Sundays.
We take a bus in Antigua, for a couple of dollars to both Jolly Harbor Beach and to Nelson’s Dockyard. This is the trip to the dockyard which also has a great beach nearby.
Many go to the Caribbean to relax on the beach. But there is more. There are very well-run specialist rainforest parks that have something for everyone, even those not too mobile.
Another trip in St Lucia is to the Volcano. If you are lucky it will stop at the Diamond Botanical Gardens on the way. Take a towel, and maybe a change of clothes! This was filmed some time ago so is not in 2k or 4k.
There are many ways to deal with a port destination. The best way is to research first. Often on the www.DorisVisits.com website, we have films and details of local tours. We are not suggesting that you take the local tours, what we are saying is that if there is something special to see, there will be a tour showing it with details.
Stuart’s new book Cruise Traffic is out. A story of three ships going around the Mediterranean and being used very cleverly for a very heinous trade. Stuart’s first book is now serialised free on YouTube.
The last trip we cover is to the only white sand beach in St Vincent. The moon is right and the locals are in the sea catching Chi Chi fish.
And Stuart bought Jean an Amber ring in Amber Cove as she missed the birth of her first grandchild. Heidi came early.
