Jean Cruises out of Belize City Port, by tender to her ship.

Belize is a South American nation and ships stop at the City Port which is right in the middle of the country. It is a tender port. Nearby islands and the vacation spots, and accessed by ferrys from where you land, but watch the timings because it involves a lot of toing and froing.

It sits on the eastern coast of Central America, with Caribbean Sea shorelines to the east and dense jungle to the west. The Mayan ruins like Caracol, renowned for its towering pyramid, are in land and require a trip. So do lagoon-side Lamanai; and Altun Ha, because although just outside Belize City you need to get there and back in good time.

The caves, lagoons and massive Belize Barrier Reef are dotted around, and there are hundreds of low-lying islands called cayes. It has a rich marine life, so whatever you choose, we suggest you plan first by looking at the tours offered below. You ship will be re-selling versions of these.

The Calypso electric road train is popular. It passes most things like the Memorial Park, which honours the fallen soldiers. Colonial mansions and working-class neighbourhoods plus the Governor’s and Prime Minister’s mansions. At the height of the mahogany trade in the late 1800s, the city’s south side housed many slave quarters; some of these original structures still exist and St John’s Cathedral as always, one of the first buildings to be built during colonisation. It crosses the iconic Swing Bridge over Haulover Creek, but it stops at the Lighthouse.

Back when I was actively directing movies I had a financier forever trying to engage me on a story of a woman who discovered oil in Belize – that was one that slipped away.
