Andalsnes at the top of the Fjords

As a cruiser going into Andalsnes you might not be thinking of ‘base jumping’ off the tallest vertical rock face in Europe (6,000ft), or even climbing it. The fact the train from Oslo stops here might not be a factor for you, but rest assured it is there to facilitate others to the spectacular sights that have to be seen to be believed. It is the reason cruises have been sailing into Tindekaia Harbour for this Alpine town at the northern end of the Romsdalfjord that you will sail in on to see the towering Romsdal Alps, since before the turn of the year 1900.

Andalsnes is close to the famous Trollstigen road. This leads through other picturesque villages, past scenic fjords and more majestic mountain peaks then across the stone bridge over the cascading Stigfossen waterfall to the Trollvegen (Troll Wall).

The relaxing way to see it is a trip on the Rauma steam train which leaves from a station right by the cruise port. You will see the Troll Wall and amazing views from various vantage points around the fjords. You may just want to go and fish sea trout, the Fjord was one of the first Norwegian rivers to host English fly fishermen in the nineteenth century and after a reduction in numbers due to an infestation of parasites the fish have recovered. There is much to do and see. Andalsnes may have way under 3,000 inhabitants but it does have an association football team.

Ship arranged tours may include a farm visit, Rødven Stave Church and the Troll Wall, or extreme Norway and Waffles – They probably won’t be offering white water rafting or swimming in the Rauma river, but it is available. Fishing can be arranged locally, including fly fishing. There are also some wonderful train rides. Enjoy.
