The odd round-shaped tilted wedge building is the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and it represents that a library has been in the city since the Hellenistic period when the lighthouse of that period was one of the seven wonders of the world. You may choose to relax on one of the many beaches or cosmopolitan cafes rather than the likes of the 15th-century seafront Qaitbay Citadel which is now a museum. Alexandria was founded around 331 BC by Alexandria the Great, on a city previously called Rhacotis. It became very successful and replaced ancient Memphis as the Capital during the period of the Ptolemaic Pharos. When the Muslims conquered in 641 AD Fustat became the new capital some 200km away. That is now Cairo. Since the 18th century, Alexandria has been a major international port, being the start of the over-land connection to the red sea.
Try the local wine, walk Up to the Clock on the Hill, or relax on the beach. Cycling trails is big; Otago Central Rail Trail, Roxburgh Gorge Trail, Gold Mining Towns and the Lighthouse, which was a wonder.
