Akureyri Church has a tale to tell. The way we heard it was that at the start of the Second World War, stained glass windows were removed from Coventry Cathedral and via a junk shop in London ended up here. There may be some truth in there somewhere, it is for you to ask. The Botanical Gardens are charming and the town welcoming. If you do not have time for the Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik, then this is your chance to lay in the hot springs. The free shuttle goes from the tourist centre, and it is a lot cheaper than the Blue Lagoon.
Look out for the knitted covers on the waste bins. There is a rainbow road, an art gallery, buzzy cafes, a cocktail bar, great kids’ playground and an ice cream parlour. Also, great shopping. Out of town, the waterfall is spectacular.
Akureyri, Iceland is a place to see the amazing Northern Lights, we have this on another blog. We didn’t see the lights due to cloudy weather, but we did see three amazing towns that were new to us on our tour of Iceland.
Many ships visit Iceland, it is a regular with SAGA ships, the Aurora and Arcadia. Norwegian and TUI also visit. It can be so busy that the port can be full (two ships) and the third has to tender. Find the chat sites for these ships on our home page.

Akureyri was the most northern city we visited, but there was no ice and it was the warmest. Carry a bag to put your coat in.
