The Marella Explorer 1 is now actively at sea and being enjoyed. The Marella Explorer 2, a slightly smaller capacity but a sister ship, will be an adult only ship sailing from summer 2019. (see brochure) The decision to make it exclusively for adults is a result of the popularity of adult-only sailings from Dubrovnik and Asia itineraries over the winter. With SAGA building two ships for this market it might be an indication that some adult couples are moving away from the ships that are becoming more family orientated. The change to adult only is not the only change, the ship is changing from the original one intended and there are other changes.
Mein Schiff 2 will no longer be the Marella Explorer 2. Royal Caribbean Cruises have closed the SkySea Cruise Line brand and the sole ship on that brand, the SkySea Golden Era will join the Marella fleet in 2019 after the the Veranda premium sunbathing area is doubled in size. All indications seem to be that this will be more adult all round with 907 cabins, of which nearly 40 per cent will have balconies. The 102m2 Royal Suites will have bedroom with King size bed, dressing room, dining area and whirlpool bath. There will be and a Champneys Spa and indigo and some of the pictures released below for the Explorer will be an indication of style.
These are glimpses of the new INDIGO BAR and the LOUNGER. Details are now up on the newExplorer page of the TUI site. Champneys have designed the state-of-the-art spa. The Explorer will sale out of Palma with more facilities than any of Marella other ships and be Marella’s biggest ship at 260m long with ten passenger decks adding to their fast growing fleet. It is currently finishing refurbishment and will offer ten places to eat including the open air Mediterranean Restaurant with both Pizza and Tapas restaurant areas, plus the Kora La, Surf ‘n Turf, Snack Shack and Uma Sushi. Built in 1996 this was originally a Celebrity Cruise ship and with TUI in a joint venture status both under the Royal Caribbean parent, it was the Mein Schiff 1. It could hold 2,860 passengers and 900 crew but what will it be like now? Here is the ‘before’ film, and we soon hope to post the ‘after’ film.
The Kora La will have Oriental-style lanterns and paintings are paired with a pan-Asian menu of curries and noodle dishes. This will be a fine dining addition and there will be a small premium to eat here. The ship may end up looking different to the film below, but it can’t be that different, this is the ship BEFORE.
Marella Cruises will be offering All Inclusive cruises from May next year, including transfers and tips. Marella Dream and Marella Celebration will join the rest of the fleet in becoming All Inclusive as standard. The decision comes following a steady increase of All Inclusive upgrades across the classic fleet over the past three years. Marella Cruises expect the All Inclusive offers to appeal to new to cruisers and younger audiences.
Marella Explorer 2 will sail from a new homeport of Naples, Italy. It will therefore cover many great Western and Eastern Mediterranean routes with less time at sea. These two ships are larger than the previous vessels in the Thomson, now Marella fleet. With 12 decks and the ability to cruise at 21.5 knots they hold around 1,880 and 1,814 guests each. These will open up new routes in Asia and there will be 14 new adult only routes and two ships will be based in the Caribbean for the Caribbean Season next year. The Marella Explorer is likely to be based in Barbados for the winter season. New to cruising, see our blog on the true cost of cruising for what a cruise really costs.
