Narvik Ofoten Railway into Sweden

Narvik Ofoten Railway into Sweden, take a look and then we will give you the things to watch out for.

The good the bad and the things to look for. It is a heated coach, it is cold outside. The mobility guide warns of three steps up to the train, pretty much the same as all European rural trains, India etc … but that was not what we thought would bother those with limited mobility. There is a hill between the train and the hotel at the ski lodge. It is compacted snow, it is slippery. Our limited guests went slowly and surefootedly and were OK. Inside the hotel, there are lifts to the tearoom they use. Some train windows open for clearer pictures, as the windows are snow and rain-glazed, but others may feel the cold. Sit by an opening window for pictures. Best views on the left-hand side – the direction of travel from Narvik. Finally, the last Cruise Doris Visits tip, it is a public train, and no number of cruisers will make it wait. Two whole coach loads from our ship missed it, my coach – well hustled, get there. It leaves on time!! Lastly, if you are a skier, you will have seen all this before. Watching the Netflix movie Narvik will explain just how significant this rail line is and how the town suffered in WWII.

The 26-mile Ofoten Railway, at the time of construction, was both the coldest and northern-most railway project in the world, carved out of the mountains. The tunnels that protect it from the snow, also mean they are warm homes for deer, so they have had to add devices to frighten the deer away. Ensure to look out for the Norwegian and Swedish flags painted on the tunnel wall, marking the border between the 2 countries, between the EU and Norway. What border? Your guide will no doubt tell of stories of how they go across the board to shop at weekends as it is cheaper in Sweden. The deer were seen on the right-hand side of the coach on return.
