CORFU destination guide

Corfu sits at bottom of the Adriatic just off Albania in the Ionian Sea, ideally placed to go north to Croatia and Venice or east to Greece and Turkey.  It is the first of many Greek islands and a gateway to the Greek Island cruises, certainly used by Marella’s Discovery 2 ship that sails from there between June and October with its Aegean Shores, Adriatic ExplorerIconic IslandsAegean Meze, and its Journey to Jamaica starts here as it repositions for the Caribbean. The different itineraries means you can choose 7, 14, or 21 days. It loads guests flying to Corfu as the Oceana uses Malta.

Greece gave us many of the things often accredited to the Romans, and they have a long tradition in the theatre and art. Corfu or Kerkyra has two forts many small churches, a scattered old town with many good restaurants but the rest is a collection of boat trips and excursions. Whilst a visit to the Durrell’s is interesting often you only get as far as swimming in the bay in front of it. A 2 Euro trip to Vido Island off the coast of Corfu offers a boat trip, secluded bays and a Durrell’s like derelict Greek House. Near and cheap.

Corfu city was Greece’s first major tourist attraction and serves as a capital for the region of the Ionian Islands. Sadly the airport has yet to change much since then and can be the cause of huge queueing and annoyance. Corfu’s architecture reveals its Venetian, French and British ruled past before it was united with Greece in 1864. The ancient city of Corfu, known as Korkyra, was one of the three great naval powers of the fifth century BC Greece, along with Athens and Corinth.Find your ship’s chat site + share your pictures + experiences to help others   FRED OLSEN GREEK CRUISE MARELLA EAST MED CRUISE P&O MEDITERRANEAN CRUISE SAGA new ships in MEDITERRANEAN

There is promenade by the seashore towards the bay of Garitsa (Γαρίτσα), and also an esplanade between the town and the upmarket area of Liston. Liston meaning arches, is the main promenade of Corfu city. Opposite, on the other side of the park it is easier for coaches to park so it is often the staging post for cruise ship shuttle buses. Both forts are huge but not the most interesting to look at. The old fort is Venetian and is from Byzantine era, and successfully repulsed all three major Ottoman sieges: the great siege of 1537, the siege of 1571 and the second great siege of Corfu in 1716.

The citadel was depicted on the reverse of the Greek 500 drachmas banknote of 1983-2001. Greece now has the Euro.
