05 British Isles

The British Isles, a land or kings and queens and conquests. The sea allowed us to build an empire and a history that includes much guilt as well as pride. Doris Visits has been to a few places in the UK, some random which we group near a cruise port. There are many great stories like the trysts of Royalty past affairs. In these places Doris Visits also tries to find the unusual for extra interest and a little edge, as well as the obvious favourites you must see.

In March 2019, we went on the 2-night P&O Mini Cruise to Amsterdam from Hull. Here's what it's about - including practical things such as parking at the terminal, what the cabin's like, the ship's facilities and entertainment, transfers, and some ideas when visiting Amsterdam. I've made more cruise videos and written lots of cruise articles at https://HowToCruise.co.uk https://youtu.be/J6M_a-6t4Gs Please share....

Founded in the 17th century to service Dutch herring fleets Lerwick is the only town in the Shetland Island, and hence the Capital. The language is English but with a style of its own and you may be forgiven for not catching what they say on the first pass. There are many minibuses that offer tours, not many full-size...

Spotted at a lunchtime gig in The Cavern in 1961, The Beatles went on to become an important part of British History. The Cavern was a night club in the arches below 10 Mathew Street a few blocks back from the docks. They had previously been fruit storage areas and an air raid shelter in World War 2. There...
Liverpool, The Beatles Museum in the Albert docks, we get full access to film this amazing part of British history. It is an extensive tour, with audio guide, featuring quotes from them and their friends, recreations of places including an almost like for like of The Cavern. All these tours are listed here for you to research what is available...

We could have asked Jean to do this film while in Liverpool, but this great 23-minute film of the Beatles Liverpool by Paul McCartney does it all. He visits his old house for the first time since a kid. We decided to feature his tour. He makes more of an impression walking into the barbers in Penny Lane than...

Liverpool is a great place to visit. The city of music, art and partying. Jean has just visited Liverpool to show the site of the cruise terminal, the ferry, the Albert Dock and what is inside the Maritime Museum and why it should not be missed. The museum has a Slavery section, Titanic Section, Lusitania section, Customs and seizing section....
Tours and their description show what the locals are proud of and wish to show. These therefore give you a guide and flavour and help you plan your visit. These tours of similar will more than likely be resold by your ship with door to door transport. However, the ship sometimes has zero availability so these might be of...

It is on the small ships that can get right up to Tower Bridge. The Silver Wind is a luxury ship, that brings guests right into the heart of London when on a British Isles tour. In 2017 it had a major re-fit and here you can see her being towed in backwards, up the Thames against the night sky....

When you finish your transit flight, your bags go to the ship. You are not normally immigrated to the country, especially in Barbados etc when going to the Caribbean. You are taken on a bonded coach, like bonded cargo to inside the shipping terminal, so still not in the country. There you queue to be immigrated onto the ship, your...

Princess cruises are still housed in the P&O building and still have sailings from Southampton. Their rich history is worth a read, and their large fleet offers many ships that are very familiar with the sisters of many P&O ships. The Pacific Princess is the sister to the Adonia and remains the small ship experience at Carnival. The Sapphire...
